Six days is enough time to watch Morocco change completely around you. Your Morocco Atlas Mountains Desert Merzouga 6 Day Itinerary begins in Marrakech, climbs into the High Atlas, crosses the kasbah landscapes of southern Morocco, reaches the dunes of Erg Chebbi and finishes among the historic streets of Fes.
The first part of the journey follows the High Atlas through the Tizi n'Tichka route. Mountain villages and wide valley views lead toward Ait Ben Haddou before the road continues through Ouarzazate and into the Dades Valley.
From Dades, travel through Todra Gorge toward Merzouga. Your first evening near Erg Chebbi gives you time to settle into the desert region before the main Sahara experience the following day.
Day three belongs to Merzouga. Leave the road behind and cross part of the Erg Chebbi dunes by camel. When conditions allow, pause on the sand as the evening light changes before continuing toward your Merzouga luxury desert camp. Dinner, traditional music when available and the quiet atmosphere after dark make this one of the defining moments of the journey.
The route then turns north toward Fes through the Ziz Valley, Midelt and the Middle Atlas. Near Azrou, you pass the cedar forest where Barbary macaques may sometimes be seen before stopping in Ifrane and continuing to Fes.
Fes gets a complete day rather than a quick overnight stop. With a local guide, walk through the Medina, artisan quarters and souks and learn how one of Morocco's oldest cities still functions today.
See more departures on our Tours from Marrakech page, or explore the dedicated Guided Tour Fes if you want more detail about the final city experience.
Meet your driver in Marrakech and leave the city behind for the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs toward Tizi n'Tichka, with panoramic stops when traffic, weather and timing allow. Continue toward Ait Ben Haddou, where you have time to walk through the historic earthen ksar. After the visit, pass through Ouarzazate and continue toward the Dades Valley. The scenery becomes increasingly dry and dramatic as the day progresses. Check into your hotel or riad in Dades for dinner and the night.
After breakfast, leave Dades and continue toward Tinghir and Todra Gorge. Step out of the vehicle and walk beside the river beneath the high canyon walls before continuing toward southeastern Morocco. By late afternoon, reach Merzouga and see the Erg Chebbi dunes rising beyond the desert plain. Spend the night in a hotel or riad near the dunes, giving you time to relax before the full Sahara experience the next day.
Today the pace becomes slower and the Sahara becomes the center of the journey. Spend time around Merzouga before meeting the camel team for the ride across Erg Chebbi. The dunes change shape and color as you move away from the village, and when weather and timing allow, there is time to stop on the sand for the evening light. Continue toward the camp, settle into your private tent and enjoy dinner. Traditional music may be played around the fire when available. Afterward, step away from the main camp lights and enjoy the desert atmosphere before spending the night beside Erg Chebbi.
After breakfast, leave the Sahara and begin the journey north. Travel through the Ziz Valley, where long palm groves cut through the dry landscape, then continue toward Midelt for a break. Cross the Middle Atlas and stop near the cedar forest around Azrou, where Barbary macaques may sometimes be observed in their natural environment. Continue toward Ifrane, known for its cooler mountain climate and distinctive architecture, before arriving in Fes. Check into your riad or hotel for the night.
Spend the day with a local guide inside Fes. Begin around the Royal Palace and Mellah before entering Fes el-Bali. Walk through narrow streets filled with workshops, food stalls, traditional markets and historic architecture. Depending on opening conditions, your route can include Al Attarine Madrasa, Nejjarine, areas around Al-Qarawiyyin and viewpoints over the Chouara tanneries. The purpose of the day is not simply to photograph monuments; your guide explains the crafts, neighborhoods and history that make the Medina easier to understand. For more information, see our Guided Tour Fes. Return to your riad in the evening.
Enjoy breakfast in Fes before the six-day journey comes to an end. Depending on your plans, transfer can be arranged to Fes Airport, the train station or another agreed accessible location. If you want to continue traveling, extra nights or extensions toward Chefchaouen, Casablanca or another Moroccan destination can be arranged before booking.
This six-day route gives you more time than a fast Marrakech–Merzouga transfer. The first days move gradually through the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, Dades and Todra before reaching the Sahara. Merzouga receives two nights, so the camel trek and luxury camp do not feel rushed. The journey then continues naturally toward Fes through the Ziz Valley, Middle Atlas, cedar forest and Ifrane. Your final full day is spent inside Fes Medina with a local guide rather than ending as soon as you reach the city. To compare similar departures, browse Tours from Marrakech.
