Leave Marrakech behind for two days and watch the landscape change almost hour by hour. This 2 day desert tour from Marrakech to Zagora crosses the High Atlas Mountains, passes through ancient earthen villages and follows the palm-filled Draa Valley before reaching the desert landscapes of southern Morocco.
The first morning begins on the winding Tizi n'Tichka road. Mountain villages, deep valleys and wide viewpoints accompany the drive toward Ait Ben Haddou, where you have time to walk through the historic ksar instead of only viewing it from the road.
From there, continue through Ouarzazate and toward Agdez. The scenery gradually changes again as you enter the Draa Valley, where long palm groves, old kasbahs and villages follow the valley south toward Zagora.
By late afternoon, the road journey gives way to a slower experience. Meet the camel team and begin a camel ride near Zagora before reaching the camp. Dinner is served there, and the evening gives you time to enjoy the quieter atmosphere of southern Morocco after dark.
The following morning, return toward Marrakech through the Draa Valley, Ouarzazate and the High Atlas Mountains. Zagora does not have the giant Erg Chebbi dunes found near Merzouga, but it offers one important advantage: it is much closer to Marrakech, making this route practical when you only have two days.
If you have an extra day and want the larger Sahara dunes, compare this trip with our 3 Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga. For different accommodation or a private route, use Customize Your Morocco Tour or contact Tours Marrakech Desert.
Meet your driver at the agreed pickup point in Marrakech and begin the journey across the High Atlas Mountains. The road follows the Tizi n'Tichka route, with short stops at viewpoints when road conditions and timing allow. Continue to Ait Ben Haddou, where you have time to walk through the earthen lanes and see the surrounding landscape. After a lunch break, travel through Ouarzazate and continue toward Agdez and the Draa Valley. Palm groves, villages and old kasbahs accompany the road south toward Zagora. By late afternoon, meet the camel team and ride through the desert landscape before reaching the camp. Settle into your accommodation, enjoy dinner and spend the evening in the quiet desert atmosphere. Overnight near Zagora.
If the weather and timing allow, wake early to enjoy the first light around the camp before breakfast. After breakfast, leave Zagora and begin the return journey through the Draa Valley. Travel back through Agdez and Ouarzazate before crossing the High Atlas Mountains again. Short breaks can be made along the road for rest and photographs. The tour ends at the agreed drop-off point in Marrakech. Arrival time depends on traffic, road conditions and the duration of the stops.
The main advantage of this 2 day desert tour from Marrakech to Zagora is the amount of southern Morocco you can experience in a very short time. The journey combines the High Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley with a camel ride and one night near Zagora. Because Zagora is considerably closer to Marrakech than Merzouga, the route works well for travelers who cannot add a third day. It is important to know that Zagora does not have the giant Erg Chebbi dunes; the attraction here is the changing road journey, palm-filled valleys, desert atmosphere and the chance to spend a night away from Marrakech.
