Your 4 day desert tour from Marrakech starts with one of Morocco's most beautiful road journeys. Leaving the city in the morning, we climb into the High Atlas Mountains, follow the bends of the Tizi n'Tichka road and watch the scenery change from green valleys and mountain villages to the dry landscapes of southern Morocco.
The first night is spent in the Dades region rather than rushing directly to the Sahara. This gives you time to enjoy the road through Skoura, the Valley of Roses and the ochre villages of the south before arriving among the cliffs and rock formations of Dades.
On the second day, the journey continues through Tinghir and Todra Gorge toward Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. This is the moment when one of the most memorable parts of our Marrakech desert tours begins. You leave the road behind, meet the camel handlers and cross part of the dunes at a slower pace. When the weather cooperates, the late-afternoon light changes the color of the sand as you move toward the camp.
Your night in the Sahara is not just a place to sleep between two driving days. You have time to walk on the dunes, try sandboarding when available, have dinner at camp and sit outside after dark. Once the vehicles have stopped moving and the camp becomes quieter, you experience a very different side of the desert.
The return to Marrakech follows another route. From Merzouga, we pass Khamlia, Rissani and the Draa region before spending the third night in Ouarzazate. The final day includes Ait Ben Haddou, the Ounila Valley and Telouet before the road crosses the High Atlas again.
Among the different trips from Marrakech to Sahara Desert, four days offers a useful advantage: you are not forced to make the entire return journey immediately after leaving the desert. The extra night around Ouarzazate makes the route more balanced and leaves time for the Draa Valley, Ait Ben Haddou and Telouet.
We pick you up from your riad, hotel or an agreed accessible point in Marrakech and leave the city behind for the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs gradually toward Tizi n'Tichka, with stops at viewpoints whenever conditions and traffic make it practical. Instead of treating the mountain crossing simply as transport, we give you time to step out, stretch your legs and look across the valleys and Amazigh villages below. After crossing the mountains, continue through the Ouarzazate region toward Skoura. Its palm oasis and earthen kasbah landscapes mark the beginning of the Road of the Kasbahs. From Skoura, continue through Kelaat M'Gouna and the Valley of Roses. During the flowering season, the valley takes on an entirely different atmosphere, but outside spring the villages and cultivated valley remain an interesting part of the route. In the afternoon, reach the Dades Valley and drive deeper into its rocky landscapes. Stop for panoramic views and see some of the unusual formations commonly called the Monkey Fingers before checking into your hotel or riad. Dinner and overnight in the Dades area.
After breakfast, continue east through the landscapes between Dades and Tinghir. Palm groves and traditional villages accompany the road toward Todra Gorge. Once there, leave the vehicle for a while and walk beside the river beneath the tall limestone walls. It is a simple stop, but being on foot inside the gorge feels very different from seeing it through a window. Continue afterward through the southeastern towns and increasingly dry landscapes toward Merzouga. By late afternoon, the Erg Chebbi dunes appear beyond the desert plain. Here the pace changes completely. Meet the camel handlers and begin your camel ride across the dunes toward camp. Depending on weather and daylight, there is time to stop on the sand and watch the evening light before continuing. At camp, settle into your private tent and, when available, try sandboarding on a nearby dune. Dinner is served at the camp, followed by traditional music around the fire when conditions allow. Then the desert becomes quieter and you have time to enjoy the Sahara at night.
If you enjoy early mornings, step outside before breakfast to see the first light over Erg Chebbi when the sky is clear. After breakfast, return toward Merzouga by camel or the arranged 4x4 transfer. Before leaving the desert region, stop around Khamlia, a village known for Gnawa musical traditions. When musicians are available, the visit offers a chance to listen to local rhythms in a setting connected to the region itself rather than a staged city performance. Continue to Rissani, historically linked with caravan trade. When your travel date coincides with the local market and the schedule allows, walk through the souk and see produce, spices, livestock areas and everyday regional trade. From Rissani, head west across the changing landscapes of southern Morocco toward the Draa region. Near Agdez, long palm groves follow the valley and offer a strong contrast with the rocky terrain surrounding them. Continue toward Ouarzazate in the afternoon and settle into your hotel or riad for the third night.
After breakfast, spend some time around Ouarzazate, one of southern Morocco's best-known film locations. Depending on your interests and opening hours, an optional visit to Atlas Studios or the Taourirt Kasbah area can be added. From Ouarzazate, continue to Ait Ben Haddou. Instead of only stopping at a distant viewpoint, take time to cross toward the ksar and walk through its earthen lanes. The fortified architecture and position on former caravan routes give the village a much deeper story than its film appearances alone. The route then follows the Ounila Valley toward Telouet, where the historic kasbah can be visited when access conditions permit. From Telouet, climb again into the High Atlas and join the Tizi n'Tichka road for the final journey back to Marrakech. Arrival is usually in the late afternoon or evening depending on traffic and the time spent at each stop. We drop you at your agreed accommodation or accessible point in Marrakech.
Four days changes the rhythm of a Marrakech–Merzouga journey. Instead of reaching the Sahara and immediately facing another very long return drive, you spend the third night in Ouarzazate and come back to Marrakech through a different part of southern Morocco.
That extra day matters. It gives you time for the Draa Valley, Khamlia, Rissani and Ouarzazate without taking time away from the camel ride and desert camp. It also means Ait Ben Haddou and Telouet can be visited on the final day with more attention.
The landscapes keep changing as the journey moves forward: High Atlas roads, Skoura's palm oasis, the cliffs of Dades and Todra, the open dunes of Erg Chebbi and finally the long palm groves of the Draa. The route itself becomes part of the experience rather than just the distance between Marrakech and Merzouga.
With Tours Marrakech Desert, we also avoid treating the Sahara as a fifteen-minute photo stop. You ride across the dunes, arrive at camp before the night is over, have dinner there and wake up in the desert the following morning.

Yes. Four days gives you enough time to reach Merzouga through Dades and Todra, spend a night in the Sahara and return through Rissani, the Draa Valley, Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou. It remains a road trip, but the return is more balanced than on shorter itineraries.
Both include the High Atlas, Dades or Todra region, Merzouga, a camel ride and desert camp. The four-day route adds more time after leaving Merzouga, normally including the Draa Valley and an overnight stay around Ouarzazate before returning to Marrakech.
Yes. A camel ride across part of the Erg Chebbi dunes is included for the journey toward the desert camp. The exact route and timing vary according to daylight, weather and the location of the camp.
The itinerary includes a private tent at a desert camp. The precise level of comfort, private bathroom availability, heating or air conditioning depends on the camp category confirmed when you book.
This four-day itinerary visits Ait Ben Haddou on the final day between Ouarzazate and Marrakech. You have time to walk through the ksar rather than only seeing it from a roadside viewpoint.
Yes. You can change hotel or camp categories, add quad biking, spend another night in Merzouga or change the pace of the journey. A customized itinerary is useful if you want more photography time, shorter driving days or specific accommodation.
